HUM 210 - American Social Movements
America has a rich history of social and reform movements including American independence, abolition, states’ rights, civil rights, women’s rights, labor rights, environmentalism, religious freedom, and peace. This course will focus on the four major reform eras in American history, as well as current social movements: antebellum reform movements; the Progressive Era; the New Deal; the 1960s; and the 21st century. These moments are when Americans formed their national identity and decided the meaning of “America.” We will address, to a greater or lesser extent, all of the major social movements in Americans’ past, exploring the ideas and actions of both those who sought change and those who opposed it.
